After being found guilty of failing to register the now-defunct fund meant to assist people arrested during the massive protests in Hong Kong three years ago
a 90-year-old Catholic cardinal was fined along with five other Hong Kong residents.
Retired bishop Cardinal Joseph Zen arrived at court wearing a black suit and carrying a walking stick
In May, he was arrested on suspicion of conspiring with foreign forces in violation of a Beijing-imposed National Security Law
Although shockwaves erupted throughout the Catholic community, the Vatican stated that it was closely monitoring the situation
Zen and the other activists in the trial were not charged with any national security-related offenses, but they were charged with failing to register the 612 Humanitarian Rescue Fund
This fund helped to pay legal and medical fees for protestors arrested since 2019. It was shut down in October 2021.
